Nevada Heat Illness Prevention Regulation Now in Effect
Effective Date: April 29, 2025
Attention Nevada Employers:
As of April 29, 2025, the Nevada Division of Industrial Relations (DIR) is officially enforcing a new Heat Illness Prevention Regulation to protect employees from heat-related hazards in the workplace.
This follows the DIR’s release of Guidance for Heat Illness Prevention earlier this year (January 29, 2025).
Who’s Affected and What’s Required?
All employers with 10+ employees must evaluate whether their employees are at risk of heat illness. If they are, employers are required to complete a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and, based on the results, take further steps.
These steps may include developing a written Heat Illness Prevention Plan (HIIP), integrating that plan into your safety program, implementing emergency response procedures, monitoring affected employees, and providing employee training on how to recognize and prevent heat illness.
Indoor workplaces with reliable climate control (such as HVAC systems) are exempt from most requirements. However, if climate control fails—due to a power outage or equipment breakdown—employers must make a good-faith effort to restore safe conditions as quickly as possible.
Why This Matters
This is more than a regulatory update—it’s a proactive push to reduce workplace injuries and liabilities related to extreme heat. Ensuring your policies and procedures are in compliance will not only keep employees safe but also protect your business from fines and claims.
